truncating

Lopping the end

Truncating is cutting something short, removing an end portion rather than the whole.

You truncate text by cutting it off at a certain point: The title was truncated to fit the display.

In computing, truncating a number removes decimal places without rounding: truncating 3.7 yields 3.

Data gets truncated when storage runs out or limits are exceeded.
