electronvolts

Subatomic energy measure

Electronvolts is the plural of electronvolt, a unit of energy used in physics, particularly for measuring atomic and subatomic particles.

One electronvolt equals the energy gained by an electron moving through an electric potential difference of one volt—a tiny amount, useful precisely because particle physics deals in tiny amounts: The particle accelerator produces beams of several billion electronvolts.

Often abbreviated eV.
