threshold energy
Reaction's entry fee
Threshold energy is the minimum amount of energy required for a particular physical process to occur, especially in nuclear or particle physics.
In a collision between particles, threshold energy is the kinetic energy needed for the reaction to proceed—below this value, the reaction simply cannot happen regardless of other conditions.
The concept also appears in photochemistry and semiconductor physics, where it describes the minimum photon energy needed to trigger electron emission or other quantum effects.
