electron shell

Atomic electron layer

An electron shell is a grouping of electrons that orbit an atomic nucleus at roughly the same distance and energy level.

Atoms have multiple shells, with inner shells holding fewer electrons than outer ones.

The outermost shell determines how an atom bonds with others: Carbon has four electrons in its outer shell, making it exceptionally versatile in forming compounds.
