quantum number

Atomic state label

A quantum number is one of a set of integers or half-integers that describe the state of a particle or system in quantum mechanics.

Each quantum number specifies a particular property—energy level, angular momentum, spin, or magnetic orientation.

Together they determine what states an electron can occupy in an atom: The Pauli exclusion principle states that no two electrons can share the same set of quantum numbers.
