ground state

Minimum energy configuration

Ground state is the lowest energy level of an atom, molecule, or other physical system—its most stable configuration.

In quantum mechanics, particles occupy the ground state unless excited by external energy.

The concept extends metaphorically to baseline conditions: After the crisis passed, we returned to our ground state of mild anxiety.
