flame test

Burning color analysis

A flame test is a chemistry technique for identifying metal ions by the color they produce when heated in a flame.

Different elements emit characteristic colors—copper burns green, sodium yellow, potassium violet.

The test is quick but imprecise, used mainly for preliminary identification: We did a flame test to confirm the presence of lithium.
