actinides

Uranium's elemental family

Actinides are a series of fifteen metallic elements in the periodic table, ranging from actinium (atomic number 89) through lawrencium (atomic number 103).

They occupy the bottom row of the periodic table alongside the lanthanides and are characterized by the filling of their 5f electron orbitals.

The most familiar actinides are uranium and plutonium, both significant in nuclear energy and weapons.

All actinides are radioactive, with the heavier ones existing only as synthetic, short-lived isotopes produced in laboratories.
