atomic orbital

Electron probability zone

An atomic orbital is a mathematical function describing the probable location and behavior of an electron around an atomic nucleus.

Rather than fixed paths, orbitals represent regions where electrons are likely to be found—shaped like spheres, dumbbells, or more complex forms depending on their energy level.

The 2p orbital has a different shape than the 1s orbital.
