vitrification

Turning to glass

Vitrification is the process of turning something into glass or a glass-like substance, typically through heat.

The term appears in ceramics, where glazes vitrify during firing, and in nuclear waste disposal, where radioactive materials are sealed in glass for stability.

In cryogenics, vitrification describes cooling biological tissue so rapidly that ice crystals can't form—the water becomes glass-like instead: The embryos were preserved through vitrification.
