postpartum psychosis
New-mother mental break
Postpartum psychosis is a rare but severe mental illness that emerges within days or weeks of giving birth.
Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and disorganized thinking—a psychiatric emergency requiring immediate treatment.
It differs from the milder "baby blues" or postpartum depression in its intensity and break from reality: She was hospitalized for postpartum psychosis after becoming convinced her infant was possessed.
