echidnas

Australian spine-covered mammals

Echidnas is the plural of echidna, a spiny egg-laying mammal native to Australia and New Guinea.

Also called spiny anteaters, echidnas have long snouts and feed on ants and termites.

Along with platypuses, they are the only surviving monotremes—mammals that lay eggs rather than bearing live young.
