red desert
Rust-colored arid expanse
A red desert is an arid landscape where iron-rich soils and sandstone give the terrain its distinctive reddish or rust-colored appearance.
The American Southwest, parts of Australia's Outback, and regions of the Arabian Peninsula feature such terrain: We drove through miles of red desert before reaching the canyon.
The color comes from oxidized iron minerals in the sand and rock.
