military campaigns
Strategic armed operations
Military campaigns are coordinated series of military operations aimed at achieving strategic objectives within a defined time and area.
A campaign encompasses multiple battles, movements, and engagements unified by a single purpose: Napoleon's Russian campaign, the Pacific campaign of World War II.
The term extends to sustained efforts against abstract enemies: the campaign against terrorism.
Campaign also applies to non-military sustained efforts—political campaigns, advertising campaigns—borrowing the sense of organized, goal-directed action over time.
