entamoeba

Intestinal protozoan parasite

Entamoeba is a genus of single-celled parasitic organisms that live in the intestines of humans and other animals.

The most medically significant species, Entamoeba histolytica, causes amoebic dysentery—a severe intestinal infection common in regions with poor sanitation.

Some species are harmless gut inhabitants.

Also spelled Entamoeba with a capital E, following biological naming conventions.
