drainage divide
Water flow separator
A drainage divide is a ridge or elevated line of terrain separating adjacent river basins, determining which direction water flows.
Rain falling on one side drains to one river system; rain on the other side drains elsewhere.
The Continental Divide in North America separates waters flowing to the Pacific from those flowing to the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
Also called a watershed, though that term more often means the basin itself rather than the boundary.
