digraphs
Two-letter sound units
Digraphs is the plural of digraph—a pair of letters representing a single sound.
In English, *ch*, *sh*, *th*, and *ph* are common digraphs: the two letters combine to produce one phoneme.
Children learn digraphs when they start reading.
The term also applies in other contexts where two symbols function as a unit.
