digraph
Two-letter sound
A digraph is two letters that represent a single sound.
In English, common digraphs include *ch*, *sh*, *th*, and *ph*—each pair produces one sound rather than two: The word "ship" begins with the digraph sh.
In other contexts, digraph refers to any two-character symbol treated as a unit.
