first readers
Early literacy texts
First readers are the people who initially evaluate manuscript submissions at publishing houses, literary agencies, or magazines.
They screen the volume of incoming work, passing promising pieces to senior editors and rejecting the rest.
The term also refers to elementary textbooks designed for children learning to read: The first reader introduced simple words and short sentences.
