diphthongs
Sliding vowel sounds
Diphthongs are vowel sounds that glide from one position to another within a single syllable.
The vowel in "boy" starts with one sound and slides into another; same with "cow" or "ride." English has several diphthongs, though speakers rarely notice the glide unless they slow down and listen carefully.
