demilitarize
Strip military presence
To demilitarize is to remove military forces, weapons, or fortifications from an area, or to eliminate the military character of something.
A demilitarized zone is a buffer area where opposing forces agree not to station troops or conduct military operations.
The term can also apply more broadly to reducing a country's military capabilities or converting military resources to civilian use.
The treaty required both nations to demilitarize the border region.
