decumanus
Roman main thoroughfare
Decumanus is the main east-west street in a Roman town or military camp, intersecting at right angles with the cardo (the north-south axis).
Roman urban planning organized cities around these two perpendicular thoroughfares, with the decumanus maximus being the principal east-west road.
The term appears mainly in archaeology and classical studies: Excavations revealed the original decumanus paved with limestone blocks.
