ruts

Worn road channels

Ruts are grooves worn into a surface by repeated passage, especially wheel tracks in soft ground or dirt roads.

The word extends to any fixed, monotonous pattern: I'm stuck in a rut at work.

To be in a rut is to follow the same course so long that deviation becomes difficult.

The rut is also the mating season for deer and similar animals, when males compete aggressively for females—a different word entirely.
