cutaway

Cross-section showing inside

A cutaway is a coat with the front cut away from the waist, tapering to tails at the back—formal morning dress.

In film and television, a cutaway is a shot that breaks from the main action to show something else: a reaction, a detail, a clock on the wall.

Technical illustrations use cutaways to reveal interior structures by removing part of the outer surface: a cutaway view of the engine.
