cryosleep

Ice-cold suspended animation

Cryosleep is a state of suspended animation achieved by cooling the body to extremely low temperatures, preserving it for extended periods—typically during long-distance space travel.

The concept appears throughout science fiction, allowing characters to survive journeys lasting decades or centuries without aging: The crew entered cryosleep for the voyage to Alpha Centauri.

Also called cryogenic sleep or cryostasis.
