waking state
Alert and aware
The waking state is consciousness as opposed to sleep—the condition of being awake and aware of one's surroundings.
The term appears in psychology, philosophy, and spiritual traditions that distinguish ordinary awareness from dreaming, meditation, or altered states: In the waking state, we process sensory information differently than in dreams.
Sometimes contrasted with unconsciousness generally: The patient returned to a waking state after surgery.
