underglaze
Beneath the shine
Underglaze refers to decoration or coloring applied to pottery before the glaze is added.
The pigments are painted directly onto the unfired or bisque-fired clay, then covered with a transparent glaze and fired together: The blue underglaze on Delft tiles.
As an adjective, it describes this technique: underglaze painting, underglaze colors.
The method produces durable decoration protected by the glaze layer above it.
