cowpokes

Cattle drive workers

Cowpokes are cowboys or cattle hands—workers who tend cattle on ranches or drives.

The word comes from the literal poking of cattle with sticks to move them along.

It has a folksy, slightly humorous tone compared to the more neutral cowboy: a bunch of cowpokes sitting around a campfire.
