cowpoke

Drives the herd

A cowpoke is a cowboy—someone who works cattle on a ranch.

The word comes from the practice of prodding cattle with poles to move them, especially into railroad cars.

It carries a casual, slightly old-fashioned flavor: Just an old cowpoke riding the range.

More common in American Western contexts than in actual ranching today.
