court jester
Royal household entertainer
A court jester was an entertainer employed by European royalty and nobility, typically during the medieval and Renaissance periods.
Jesters performed comedy, music, and acrobatics, but their most distinctive privilege was speaking uncomfortable truths to power under cover of humor.
The role survives figuratively: someone called a court jester today plays the fool or provides comic relief in a group, sometimes while delivering pointed observations others won't risk saying directly.
