groundling
Standing theater patron
A groundling is a fish that stays near the bottom, or a plant that grows low to the ground.
The word survives mainly in its theatrical sense: a spectator who stood in the pit of an Elizabethan theater, paying the cheapest admission to watch from floor level.
Shakespeare has Hamlet warn actors not to play to the groundlings.
The term now refers to anyone with unsophisticated tastes or, more neutrally, to ordinary audience members.
