coracles

Hide-covered river craft

Coracles are small, round boats made of woven branches covered with waterproof material—traditionally animal hides, now often canvas or fiberglass.

Light enough to carry on one's back, they've been used for thousands of years on rivers in Wales, Ireland, and parts of Asia.

A coracle is paddled with a single oar in a figure-eight motion: He crossed the river in a coracle.
