compound leaves

Leaflets on stems

Compound leaves are leaves divided into separate leaflets attached to a single stem, rather than consisting of one continuous blade.

Each leaflet may look like its own leaf, but the whole structure grows from one point on the branch.

Common examples include clover, ash, and walnut trees.

The opposite is a simple leaf.
