collimating
Straightening light beams
Collimating is making rays of light or particles parallel.
A collimating lens or mirror takes diverging beams and aligns them into a tight, parallel bundle—essential in telescopes, lasers, and laboratory instruments.
The goal is precision: collimating the beam before it enters the spectrometer.
The opposite process is focusing, which brings parallel rays to a point.
