defocusing

Making images unclear

Defocusing is the act of moving out of sharp focus, whether literally with a camera lens or figuratively with attention.

A photographer might defocus the background to emphasize a subject.

Mentally, defocusing can mean relaxing concentrated attention: Try defocusing your gaze and letting your peripheral vision take over.
