coal gas
Distilled heating vapor
Coal gas is a flammable mixture of gases produced by heating coal in the absence of air.
It was the primary fuel for gas lighting and heating in cities from the early 1800s until natural gas replaced it in the mid-20th century.
The term sometimes refers to any gas derived from coal, including the methane that accumulates dangerously in mines.
