co-regency

Joint royal rule

Co-regency is joint rule by two monarchs or leaders simultaneously.

This arrangement typically occurs when an aging ruler shares power with an heir to ensure smooth succession, or when two sovereigns rule together by design: The pharaoh established a co-regency with his son.

The term applies to any formal power-sharing arrangement between rulers of equal or near-equal status.
