joint sovereignty
Dual territorial control
Joint sovereignty is shared governmental authority over a territory by two or more states or powers.
Unlike outright ownership by one nation, joint sovereignty divides control—sometimes alternating, sometimes concurrent: The treaty established joint sovereignty over the disputed islands.
The arrangement often emerges from territorial disputes where neither party will cede full claim, as with historical proposals for Northern Ireland or various border regions.
