cloture

Silencing Senate procedure

Cloture is a parliamentary procedure for ending debate and bringing a matter to an immediate vote.

In the U.S.

Senate, cloture requires a supermajority to overcome a filibuster: The bill failed to reach the sixty votes needed for cloture.

The verb form works the same way: They clotured the debate after fourteen hours.
