ballcock
Cistern float valve
A ballcock is a valve mechanism that controls water level in a tank, typically a toilet tank or cistern.
A hollow ball floats on the water surface; as the water rises, the ball rises with it and eventually shuts off the inlet valve.
When water drains, the ball drops and opens the valve to refill the tank.
The toilet kept running because the ballcock was stuck.
