chitons
Oval armored sea creatures
Chitons names two unrelated things.
In marine biology, chitons are oval mollusks with eight overlapping shell plates, clinging to rocks in tidal zones.
In ancient Greece, a chiton was a tunic—a simple garment of draped fabric fastened at the shoulders, worn by both men and women.
The plural covers both: The tide pool was full of chitons; Greek statues often depict figures in flowing chitons.
