chip shot

Short approach stroke

A chip shot is a short, lofted golf stroke played from near the green, designed to get the ball airborne briefly before it rolls toward the hole: She hit a clean chip shot to within three feet of the pin.

The term extends to any easy, close-range attempt—in soccer, a gentle lob over the goalkeeper, or in football, a short field goal: It was a chip shot from twenty yards out.
