lob shot
Over-the-head stroke
A lob shot is a high, arcing stroke in racket sports, hit to sail over an opponent who has moved close to the net: She answered the volley with a perfect lob shot.
The trajectory buys time and forces the opponent backward.
In golf, a lob shot uses a high-lofted wedge to produce a steep, soft-landing approach.
