chemical formulas
Substance composition shorthand
Chemical formulas are notation systems that represent the composition of chemical substances using element symbols and numbers.
A molecular formula like H₂O shows which atoms and how many of each; a structural formula shows how they're arranged.
The plural *formulae* appears in technical writing but *formulas* dominates in everyday use: Balance the chemical formulas on both sides of the equation.
