balanced equation

Stoichiometrically correct formula

A balanced equation is a chemical equation in which the number of atoms of each element is equal on both sides, reflecting the conservation of mass.

Coefficients are adjusted so that what goes into a reaction matches what comes out: Balance the equation by putting a 2 in front of H₂O.

The term occasionally extends to any equation where both sides are equal.
