subscripts

Small below-line numbers

Subscripts are characters—usually numbers or letters—set slightly below the normal text line.

They appear most often in scientific and mathematical notation: H₂O uses a subscript 2 to show two hydrogen atoms.

In programming, subscripts identify elements within an array or sequence.

The verb subscript means to write or mark with such characters.
