blue state

Left-leaning electoral territory

A blue state is an American state that reliably votes Democratic in elections, from the color used to represent Democratic wins on electoral maps.

The term emerged after the 2000 presidential election when news networks standardized their color coding: California is a solid blue state.

The opposite is a red state.
