cattle guard

Hoofed-animal deterrent

A cattle guard is a grid of parallel bars or pipes set over a pit at a fence line, allowing vehicles to cross while preventing livestock from passing.

The gaps between bars are wide enough that hoofed animals won't step on them.

Also called a cattle grid (British) or Texas gate.

We drove over the cattle guard onto the ranch property.
