rest area

Interstate stopping point

A rest area is a designated stopping place along a highway where travelers can park, use restrooms, and take breaks from driving.

Rest areas typically offer picnic tables, vending machines, and travel information, but unlike service stations, they usually don't sell fuel: We pulled into a rest area to stretch our legs.

Also called a rest stop.
