casemates
Fortified gun rooms
Casemates are fortified chambers built into defensive walls or ramparts, typically with embrasures—openings through which guns can be fired while protecting the gunners inside.
The term applies to armored enclosures on warships as well as land fortifications: The garrison retreated to the casemates when the outer walls fell.
Fort Sumter's casemates sheltered Confederate soldiers during the Civil War bombardment.
